James is a multidisciplinary theatre maker, teacher, and scholar. James has written, collaborated on, acted in, and directed performances in Europe, the US, and Canada. In the Bay Area, James has worked in various capacities with Berkeley Rep, Théâtre de la Jeune Lune, Playwrights Foundation, Eye Zen Presents, and others. In the UK, he has worked with the Bush Theatre, where he developed his solo performance You Know How I Feel and acted as Research Associate. His plays Frank and Christopher, misc romance, and Icarus have been performed in San Francisco; Above the Fog was produced in France; devised piece Berta la Larga toured in France and the Czech Republic. As Artistic Director of Les Alpes Mancelles en Scène, he coordinated a theatre festival in rural France for two years, 2005-6. In 2013, he completed a PhD in theatre and performance studies focused on authorship and social practice, and he holds an MFA in playwriting from San Francisco State University. He also studied for two years at the Jacques Lecoq Theatre School in Paris. He has earned several awards, including the Jim Highsmith award for playwriting in 2009. He lives in the Bay Area, where he creates solo performance and works with colleagues such as detour dance, and teaches at several colleges.
